How to play Hearts
The goal is to take as few points as possible. Every heart you win is 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is 13. When someone reaches the target score, the player with the lowest total wins the match.
- Pass three cards. Before each round everyone passes 3 cards — to the left, then right, then across (with 4 players), then nobody passes, and the cycle repeats.
- The lowest club leads. Whoever holds the 2♣ (or the lowest club in play) leads it to start the round.
- Follow suit if you can. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one. If you can't follow, play anything — this is your chance to dump hearts or the Q♠ on someone else.
- No points on the first trick. You can't throw a heart or the Q♠ on the very first trick unless your hand leaves you no choice.
- Hearts must be broken. You can't lead a heart until one has been played on an earlier trick — unless you have nothing but hearts.
Shooting the moon: win all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades in one round, and instead of taking 26 points, everyone else gets 26. High risk, huge reward.
Hearts with 3, 5, 6, 7 or 8 players
Classic Hearts is a 4-player game, but here you can play with anyone who's around. With other table sizes a few low cards (2♦, 2♣, 3♦, 3♣…) are removed so everyone gets the same number of cards, and the lowest club left in the deck leads. The hearts and the Queen of Spades are never removed, so every round still hands out exactly 26 points.
How Hearts works on deckofcardgames
- Private rooms: create a table, share the code or link, and up to 8 friends can join.
- The host chooses the target score (50, 75 or 100) and whether to pass cards.
- Illegal cards are dimmed for you — no accidental reneging.
- Cards you received in the pass are tagged new so you can see what you were given.
- A running scoreboard tracks each round and the match total.
Hearts strategy tips
- Pass the Q♠, A♠ and K♠ if you're short on spades — they're the cards most likely to land you 13 points.
- Void a suit early (pass all your diamonds, for example) so you can dump points when that suit is led.
- Keep low hearts. They let you duck under other players once hearts are broken.
- Watch for a moon shot. If one player is winning every heart, take a single heart yourself to stop them.
Hearts FAQ
Can I play Hearts online with friends for free?
Yes. Create a room, share the 6-letter code, and your friends join from their own phones or computers. It's free and there's no account.
How many players can play Hearts?
Here, 3 to 8. Four is the classic game; other sizes remove a few low cards so the deal comes out even.
Does the Queen of Spades break hearts?
No — only playing a heart breaks hearts. The Q♠ is a spade, so it can be led at any time.
What happens if two players tie?
When the match ends, everyone tied on the lowest score shares the win.
